Black Cats suffer Welbeck blow

Sunderland striker Danny Welbeck has been ruled out for three weeks through injury.

The on-loan Manchester United forward suffered a hamstring tear in the midweek win at Aston Villa and scans have confirmed he will be out for the rest of January.
Welbeck has scored five goals in his last eight Barclays Premier League appearances and his absence will be a major blow to manager Steve Bruce who has guided the Black Cats to sixth place in the table.

Midfielder David Meyler was a relieved man though, after scans revealed he has not ruptured his cruciate ligament for a second time.
The Irishman was carried off the field on a stretcher at Villa Park in agony on Wednesday sparking fears he had suffered a recurrence of the injury which sidelined him for seven months last year.
However, tests have revealed the ligament is intact and he was consulting his specialist over the treatment he needs.

Bruce said: "The great news we got is Meyler has not ruptured the cruciate ligament. It's still intact - that's what the scans have told us, which is great news for us. He has still wrenched his knee horribly. We will know more in the next few hours in terms of time schedules but he will be out for weeks."
