Richards aims to end taunts

Micah Richards has told Manchester United fans to enjoy mocking Manchester City's trophy drought while they can.

While the Red Devils have enjoyed much success in recent years, United fans have revelled in their rivals' misery, parading a banner on the Stretford End indicating how many years it is since the Blues last won a major trophy.
That was the 1976 League Cup and Monday was the 35th anniversary of when Dennis Tueart's overhead kick gave the Blues a 2-1 win over Newcastle United at Wembley.
But Richards, 22, believes City could soon put an end to those taunts this season as they are set to face Championship side Reading at home in the FA Cup quarter-finals and have reached the last 16 of the Europa League.
Richards watched Birmingham City upset Arsenal to win last week's Carling Cup final, lifting their first trophy for 48 years, and City's longest-serving player admits it got him thinking why the Blues haven't ended their own trophy drought in recent years.

Good Banter

"You see Birmingham winning something and you start to wonder, because we've got a great team here," he said.
"We all want to be a part of something special and win something for this club. It's just a case of going out there and doing it.
"It would take the pressure off if we got that first one and I think more could follow. I think the trophies would start coming thick and fast."
United fans have unveiled a new banner as each year has passed by but Richards admits the current City squad would relish being the ones that force them to remove the taunt.
"Yeah, it's something that drives the boys on a bit," he said. "It's good banter between the two sets of fans, but we don't think there's too much in it now between us and United.
"It would be nice to be a part of the team that pulls it down one day. I'm sure that if we keep working hard, that day will come soon.
"The boys who have come through the Academy, like me, would love to win something with this club. It would give us a really great and proud feeling.
"I've been playing for about five seasons now and having not won anything is a bit of a disappointment.
"But we've got a good team now, with the backing of the chairman, so hopefully times will change and we can win something.
"I believe we can win the FA Cup, and most of the competitions we're in, with this squad. It's just important that we don't get complacent and think we're there already."
