FC Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 AS Roma (agg: 6-2)Two Willian goals and another from substitute Eduardo ensured the home side's first knockout campaign will continue into the quarter-finals.
FC Shakhtar Donetsk reached the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time after an impressive display completed a comfortable aggregate win against AS Roma.
Mircea Lucescu's side had gone through in each of the previous five UEFA competition ties in which they had won the away leg and rarely looked like relinquishing the 3-2 advantage gained in Rome three weeks ago.
Willian's cross-shot extended the lead in the 18th minute but the visitors spurned a golden chance to swiftly draw level when Marco Borriello's penalty was saved by Andriy Pyatov and the dismissal of Philippe Mexès effectively ended Roma's hopes before the break. Second-half goals from Willian and Eduardo completed an impressive win for Shakhtar, who now go into next Friday's draw for the last eight.
Despite the final margin of victory, Shakhtar were on the back foot in the opening exchanges as Roma pushed forward in numbers and enjoyed the majority of possession. That early momentum was checked when the opening goal arrived at the other end just past the quarter-hour, Willian evading his marker on the left and delivering a low cross which, with Tomáš Hübschman at close quarters, evaded Doni.
Roma continued to press and within ten minutes had the chance to get back into the contest when Borriello was pulled down by Henrik Mkhitaryan. The striker took responsibility himself from the spot, but his low kick was well saved by Pyatov down to his left. The away team's night went from bad to worse when Mexès collected his second yellow card for a foul on Luiz Adriano four minutes before the break.
Both sides had chances at the start of the second half, but Willian extinguished any slender hopes that Vincenzo Montella's side might have had of completing an improbable comeback on 58 minutes with Shakhtar's second goal. Darijo Srna's corner made its way to the Brazilian with time and space inside the penalty area and his precise right-foot shot found the top corner, giving Doni no chance.
With progress all but assured, Shakhtar were content to sit back and keep possession. A memorable evening was given an appropriate conclusion as Eduardo added a third goal three minutes from time, the substitute capitalising on a short back-pass from Aleandro Rosi to slide a shot under the goalkeeper and send the home fans into raptures.
