Champions League final 2011: Wembley looks for its new wow factor as Manchester United face Barcelona

From Michael Jackson and Muhammad Ali to Madonna and Maradona, the list of performers who have left their mark on Wembley Stadium reads like a Who’s Who of the world’s most iconic entertainers.

Lionel Messi’s Barcelona and Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United have the chance to inscribe themselves in Wembley folklore on Saturday night on what is certainly the biggest occasion since the new national stadium reopened in 2007.
For what PelĂ© describes as “the cathedral of football”, it will also be historic. No other venue has staged the European Cup final on six occasions and, according to David Thomson, who has worked at Wembley since 1987 and is the events director, it has also been one of the most challenging feats of organisation.
“Purely for global media attention, this Champions League final has to be the biggest thing we have had,” he said. “It is an absolutely fantastic opportunity to show the world what we do.
As a Spurs fan, I say through gritted teeth that it was probably our dream final. If we were to choose from the outset then certainly these two will deliver an amazing match. Everybody is incredibly excited.”
The global interest is immense. A worldwide television audience of 220 million is expected for a match that will be screened in more than 100 countries.
