Cesc Fabregas transfer - Arsenal FC confirm FC Barcelona contact made

Arsenal have confirmed that Barcelona have made formal contact about the transfer of captain Cesc Fabregas

The Spanish champions are hoping that they can finally sign the 24-year-old this summer and bring him back to his boyhood club after spending the last three seasons trying to convince the Gunners to sell their influential midfielder.

And Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has revealed that the Champions League winners have confirmed their interest in signing Fabregas this summer.

"Yes, they have spoken to us about Cesc," Hill-Wood told the Sunday Mirror. "They have been in touch.

"But so far they have not made a bid and we do not want to let him go.

"But he comes from Barcelona so it is understandable if he wanted to go back. However, they have not made an offer so far."

Fabregas was expected in Barcelona earlier this week to spend some time on holiday, with reports in Spain suggesting Barca sources will sound him out about a potential move to Camp Nou.

The midfielder appears to be open to a shock move to Barca's rivals, Real Madrid, although it is known that his first choice of club should he leave Arsenal is a return to the Catalan giants.

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell earlier this week said that their valuation of Fabregas - who is their top summer transfer target - is less than it was twelve months ago, when they failed with a £35m bid.
