Within minutes of Swansea securing their place in the Barclays Premier League thanks to a 4-2 Play-off final win against Reading, they were already being tipped for an immediate return to the Championship.
In the past two years Burnley and Blackpool have both won at Wembley only to drop straight back down after a brave fight.
And Monk is realistic enough to know that his side will be widely expected to suffer the same fate.He said: "It has been a fairytale story to get this far - but now the hard work really starts.
"We know everyone wil be expecting us to go straight back down but hopefully we can prove them wrong as we did this year.
"We were being tipped to be relegated from the Championship this season. People saw we had lost another manager and thought we would be relegated.
"But Brendan Rogers has come in and done a fantastic job. He has taken us to a whole new level both mentally and physically.
"We have played some fantastic football and have stuck to our passing principles throughout.
"There may be some games next season where we may have to be tactically more astute but I can't see us changing our style.
"We have got to keep doing what has got us this far. We will keep playing football and will do what we think is right.
"We know it won't be easy and people have already written us off but there is great character and belief in this team.
"We have a fantastic set of supporters behind us and I don't doubt for one minute that we can stay up."
