Newcastle have pulled out of the race to sign Wigan winger Charles N’Zogbia, who is also a target for Liverpool and Everton
Sunderland are also believed to be interested in the £12million-rated midfielder, who will leave the DW Stadium this summer if the Latics' valuation is met.
Liverpool are believed to be favourites to sign the 25-year-old, who they could make a bid for should they fail to sign Stewart Downing from Aston Villa.
And the Merseysiders' chances of signing the France international may have increased after the Daily Mirror reported that Newcastle have ruled out a bid for their former player because of his £60,000-a-week wage demands.
The Magpies were reportedly ready to meet Wigan's asking price, but manager Alan Pardew has cooled on a move because he believes his personal terms are too high.
Pardew last week added some width to his side by beating Liverpool to the free transfer signing of Sylvain Marveaux from Rennes.
Liverpool are also interested in signing Manchester City winger Adam Johnson (see below) as they look to bring in players who can provide them with some much needed width in time for the start of next season.
