The hard-man excelled under new Villa boss McLeish for Scotland and Rangers, before making his £9m move to Spurs in 2008.
A transfer is being given serious consideration, with
Luke Young the only right-back at Villa Park - Tottenham having recalled promising starlet Kyle Walker from his loan spell.
Coaching staff are concerned that competition is needed for
the position and don't want to risk Young becoming complacent this
season.
Hutton, now 26, has been hotly pursued by McLeish, who had a £6million offer rejected by Spurs while manager at Birmingham.
Vedran Corluka is the current White Hart Lane starter on the
right side of the back four, so Hutton faces the prospect of little
action next season - again.
In a little over three years at Spurs, Hutton has managed just 51 appearances.
Steve Bruce was another manager weighing up Hutton's potential after he spent time on loan at Sunderland in 2010.
But the Black Cats' recent splurge on Wes Brown and John
O'Shea from Manchester United all but rules out any move for the
Scotsman.
