The
23-year-old has been linked with both the Gunners and Liverpool in
recent weeks, with the Merseysiders considering a move for the Spain
Under-21 international should they be unable to lure Stewart Downing
away from Aston Villa.
But according to the Daily Mirror,
Arsenal are preparing to make a £15m bid for the creative player,
although manager Arsene Wenger apparently does not consider him to be a
direct replacement for Samir Nasri.
Nasri is
yet to agree a new £90,000-a-week contract at the Emirates and is
believed to be interested in joining Manchester United.
According
to Friday's report, Arsenal have opened negotiations with the La Liga
side over a deal for Mata, with his father quoted as saying: "There have
been calls from foreign clubs but now the decision rests with Valencia.
He is on his holidays."
Valencia have insisted
publicly that Mata is not for sale and the player himself recently
revealed he could stay at the club next season after the club qualified
for next season's Champions League.
However, it is thought that the Spaniards could be forced to sell him as they look to ease their financial crisis.
Speaking
recently, Mata was quoted as saying: "I want to win a trophy with
Valencia next season. I've not planned anything different as I've a
contract until 2015."
