Liverpool will today make a new £18million
bid for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing, while the player will tell
new Villa boss Alex McLeish that he wants to leave the club and move to
Anfield.
McLeish has insisted that the
26-year-old is not for sale, while the club have told both Liverpool and
Downing's agent that they will not be forced into selling the England
international.
But despite McLeish on Thursday
stating that he did not want to sell the former Middlesbrough
midfielder, Downing is ready to submit a transfer request in a bid to
push through a move.
Liverpool failed with a £15m bid for Downing earlier this week but are preparing to lodge an improved offer of £18m.
Reports
earlier in the week had claimed Villa would reluctantly let the player
leave the Midlands club should they receive a £19m offer.
"I
understand why there are teams interested in him and that is what
happens when you play well consistently," said McLeish on Thursday.
"His performances last season were top drawer - that's why he's not for sale. The club don't want to sell him.
"I spoke to him briefly last week and I intend speaking to him again when all the lads are back in for training."
Liverpool,
who have completed the signing of Charlie Adam, are hoping to complete a
deal for Downing by the weekend before they fly out for an eight-day
tour of the Far East.
