Ruud van Nistelrooy will leave Hamburg in the summer after having his return to Real Madrid blocked by the Bundesliga club.
The Dutchman had become a target of the Spaniards after they lost Gonzalo Higuain to injury and the player had his heart set on a return to Spain, but Hamburg have closed the door on a move and told him to stay put.
His agent Rodger Linse says his client is far from happy that the move will not go through and that he now has no intention of staying when his contract expires in the summer.
"It is now ruled out that Ruud will extend his contract with HSV," he said. "That is certainly no longer possible."
Linse added that Van Nistelrooy "cannot understand" why his club would stand in his way, and that "he has a problem with that. It hurts. It hurts him a lot," added Linse.
"It is saddening because Hamburg really don't realise what they are doing to Ruud. (Hamburg chairman Bernd) Hoffmann told me that HSV have better chances of reaching the Champions League or the Europa League with Ruud."
Van Nistelrooy, who has scored 11 goals in 27 games since joining Hamburg a year ago, must now concentrate on doing his job for 15 more times this season, and Linse has no doubts that he will take the news professionally.
He said: "Ruud now has to show that he is a man. He has got to do what he does best, which is score goals. There is no point doing anything else."
