Alberto Aquilani is facing an embarrassing return to Liverpool after Juventus insisted they will not turn his loan move into a permanent one.
The Italian midfielder, 26, spent last season on loan in Turin, making 33 appearances as he tried to resurrect his career.Yet Liverpool's determination to recoup around half of the £18million he cost two years ago is far more than new Juve boss Antonio Conte will pay.
And with AC Milan also baulking at the fee, flop Aquilani could now find himself back on the sidelines at the club where he spent a nightmare 12 months.
He arrived at Anfield with an ankle injury and made just 14 starts - the last coming in a Europa League clash with Rabotnicki last August.
Ironically, Liverpool must pay the final instalment of his fee - nearly £4.5m - to Roma at the end of the month.
