Real Madrid CF wanted to sign Thiago Alcantara from FC Barcelona

Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara was a transfer target for Real Madrid before he signed a new deal with the Catalans, his father has claimed

20-year-old Alcantara this week ended speculation about his future by signing a two-year contract extension at Camp Nou.

The Spain Under-21 international had also been linked with a move to Premier League champions Manchester United, with reports last week claiming the Red Devils had made a £15million bid for the youngster.

But after recently being quoted as saying he would like to play for Chelsea, Alcantara has put pen-to-paper on a new deal with Barca which ties him to the club until 2015.

However, according to his father, Real Madrid were interested in signing the highly-rated Spaniard.

Mazinho told ONA FM of interest from the Spanish capital: "They asked about him, just like many other European clubs did."

Of the new contract, the 45-year-old added: "They [Barcelona] called us on Tuesday and they had the contract almost completely written. We came to an agreement quickly.

"He is delighted with his new contract, he wants to stay at Barcelona for the rest of his life.

"I never doubted that Thiago would stay. The club had always called us, given us that peace, that security, and had always wanted to end all that story."

And as part of the deal, Alcantara now has a €90million release clause.
